Three months after all undergraduates were invited to convert from Yale Horde email to EliApps, Information and Technology Services is still waiting for the majority of students to switch their accounts.

Though students have received multiple emails from ITS reminding them to make the switch before the end of the academic year, 60 percent of undergraduates have yet to transition from Horde to EliApps, said Loriann Higashi, manager of the Student Technology Collaborative. ITS has not finalized plans for what will happen to students who do not migrate before the year ends, but Higashi said those students will likely have their EliApps accounts created automatically and may lose access to their old emails.

Until they officially switch to the Google Apps for Education platform, students will continue to receive reminder emails from ITS, Higashi said. She added that students who transfer their accounts before the deadline should have no issues maintaining access to old email files.

“We want every student to choose what they wish to do with their existing account,” Higashi said. “We really want students to be happy with [EliApps].”

EliApps accounts give students 25 gigabytes of storage along with access to Google Calendar, Documents and Sites. The one EliApps feature not yet enabled is Google Groups, Higashi said, which ITS has “soft-launched” and is testing. Higashi said an official release date has not been set for Google Groups, which she said will likely serve the same purpose as mailman lists and panlists.

Members of the class of 2012 have the option to opt out of the change, and Higashi said 20 percent of those students have chosen to do so thus far. The class of 2016 will automatically enter with EliApps.

But three of six students from the classes in-between said they had not migrated to EliApps and are fine with waiting for ITS to make the switch, as their Horde accounts already forward to other email systems.

“Even though it would just take a few minutes, I don’t want to have to go through trouble of setting up my Apple Mail again,” Chuyang Wei ’15 said. “Things are convenient for me the way they are.”

Liz Jones ’15, who has not migrated to EliApps, said she is hesitant to switch during the middle of the semester for fear an error could occur. Jones said she would prefer to convert after the semester ends, adding that she is comfortable with forwarding her Yale mail to her Gmail account at the moment.

STC Assistant Manager Adam Bray ’07 said that only approximately 20 transfer errors have occurred among the 40 percent of students who have already switched. He added that ITS successfully resolved all those transfer errors.

Bray said transfer errors occur if Horde accounts have exceeded their two-gigabyte storage limit, causing the accounts to become “corrupted.” Sometimes students experience this problem if they forward their mail to another email server but do not delete the emails from their Horde account, Bray said. If students plan to continue forwarding their email to another account, they must still switch to EliApps and then reforward their email, he added.

David Crosson ’14, who transferred to EliApps in early January, said he finds the new server more user-friendly, noting that EliApps is easier to access from multiple computers. Crosson said he has felt frustrated by Horde since he first began using the system and quickly began forwarding his email to another account. He added that he hopes ITS will launch Google Groups soon.

“I’m hoping if they do a Google version of panlists, new groups will be able to be created and people will not have to be grandfathered into existing panlists,” Crosson said. “Panlists connect students and allows for organizations to run much better.”

Jessica Xu ’15 said she never forwarded her mail from Horde, but now has her phone synchronized with EliApps account, and prefers the new setup.

Of the nation’s top 100 schools, 61 currently use Google Apps for Education, according to the Google Apps for Education website.

Z A LLC’s newly launched email-searches.com website helps find information about anonymous emailer‘s.

Alpharetta, GA (PRWEB) February 17, 2012

Email lookup s are now easy with the world’s largest directory of email addresses available to the public through special data partnerships. Finally a one stop location for email searches is available by Z A LLC.

As unsolicited or often bizarre emails arrive by the millions to inboxes daily, finding the email sender can be annoying and concerning as well. Several of the current methods to search emails are every time consuming. Current techniques include Google the email address, look through various online social media sites or as a last resort start corresponding with the unknown sender. This may just add additional email addresses to spam lists.

There are several programs that can bock spam and many of these are quite effective. According to Paul Art at Email Searches

”People are just too busy to spend all day researching an email sender.”

This was the goal of email-searches.com, to find a one stop email database solution to search email addresses. Most databases will charge in excess of $29 for access but at email searches .com we only charge $1 for a 5 day access. After the 5 days of a trial the option is given to continue the service if needed.

We hope this new website model can help in both the speed of email lookups and the low cost initial search.

Demand Media posts $6.4-million loss in fourth quarter from the Los Angeles Times reports that Google’s Panda algorithm is mostly to blame for Demand Media’s $6.4 million loss in the fourth quarter of 2011.
The Dilbert cartoon above doesn’t speak well of the search engine optimization position.
Every search practitioner, either paid and organic, has at some point received the same questioning phone call or email from their client or boss: “I’m was searching on Google for our natural listing (or paid ad) and I don’t see it.” Most of the time, this is due to the search engines personalizing their results for [...]

Walt Bennetti

Citizens for a Better Kenner, he said, “is not a political organization,” he told Mayor Mike Yenni, Police Chief Steve Caraway and Jefferson Parish Councilman Ben Zahn, a former City Council member. “To continue to call us ‘political operatives’ is an injustice.”

Bennetti was responding to an email the three had sent a week earlier. They sought to defend the actions of a Kenner couple who emailed neighbors — copying the three politicians — about plans to erect campaign signs for Mary-Sharon Howland. She is seeking Zahn’s former seat on the City Council.

The sign message caused a flap in the council race, with some members of Citizens for a Better Kenner speaking out against what they called “voter intimidation.” The three politicians fired back by referencing “disgruntled political operatives who deceptively cloak themselves under the cape of ‘Citizens for a Better Kenner.’”

In his response this week, Bennetti said Citizens for a Better Kenner doesn’t endorse political candidates and “was formed by citizens to be a government watchdog group, expose government waste and inefficiency and create a positive change in Kenner.”

Zahn, with Yenni and Caraway’s backing, defeated Bennetti for the 4th Parish Council District seat last year.

Bennetti said in his latest email that Yenni has characterized his group as “Citizens Against Virtually Everything,” and he listed eight actions the group has taken to “bring about positive change in Kenner.” Among his points: persuading officials to install a “no left turn” sign at Walgreen’s on West Esplanade Avenue and to illuminate the north parking lot at The Esplanade shopping mall.

Most defamatory in the political trio’s email, Bennetti said, is an accusation that his group “hoped to intimidate business owners” who advertised with the monthly Kenner Star publication. Bennetti said his group asked that the business owners skip advertising for only one month, after Yenni wrote an editorial slamming his critics.

Bennetti said Friday he had not received a retraction from the officials.

And he might not get one.

Caraway said he isn’t spending much time on Bennetti’s demand. “To me, there’s too many other important issues to address other than his insignificant comments and concerns,” Caraway said. “I just don’t have time. I’m not going to comment on it more than that.”

Every quarter, fund managers have to disclose what they’ve bought and sold. Their latest moves can shine a bright light on smart stock picks.

Today, let’s look at investing giant George Soros. Soros is known to some folks these days for his politics and philanthropy, but his fame stems from his wealth, which is a result of his outstanding investing prowess. He founded Soros Fund Management back in 1973, and under its umbrella the Quantum funds racked up an amazing record, reportedly averaging close to 20% annual growth over four decades.

Soros’ stock portfolio totaled $4.6 billion in value as of Dec. 31, 2011, down 21% over last quarter. His top three holdings, representing more than 30% of the portfolio’s total value, are Motorola Solutions, InterOil, and the agricultural company Adecoagro.

Interesting developments
So what does Mr. Soros’ latest 13F filing tell us? Well, for one thing, he’s concentrating his holdings much more, having completely sold out of several hundred stocks and ending up with about 145.

Here are a few more interesting details:

Among Soros’ new holdings is MELA Sciences (Nasdaq: MELA ) , which reflects Soros’ willingness to buy into very tiny companies. With a market cap recently around $100 million, it’s the kind of company that Warren Buffett would typically pass up, deeming it too small to make a difference in a multibillion-dollar portfolio. MELA fans are excited about its melanoma detection device, which recently received FDA approval.

Chinese search engine Baidu.com (Nasdaq: BIDU ) got a lot more support from Soros, as the number of its shares held soared 170%. It’s still a small holding for the Soros portfolio, but the increase seems to have been wise, as the company recently posted fourth-quarter revenue up 83% over year-ago levels and earnings up 77%. Interestingly, competitor Google is looking to expand in China, while Baidu.com is looking outside it.

Among the holdings that Soros trimmed was biotech concern Elan (NYSE: ELN ) , which saw its share count drop by 22%. The stock recently took a hit as it posted disappointing revenue, bigger-than-expected losses, and shrinking margins. Still, long-term investors are quite bullish on the prospects for its multiple-sclerosis drug Tysabri, thinking it could be a big blockbuster.

Two of the companies that Soros completely sold out of are Sirius XM Radio (Nasdaq: SIRI ) and BioSante Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: BPAX ) . Sirius bears are worried about slowing subscriber growth and price hikes the company is enacting, while bulls point out that recent subscriber growth has been impressive despite price hikes. Rising car sales bode well for Sirius, but at this point, many new car buyers are already Sirius subscribers. BioSante has had some mixed results lately; its LibiGel treatment failed to prove itself (at least so far) a Viagra for women, while its Bio-T-Gel treatment for hypogonadism was approved by the FDA.

We should never blindly copy any investor’s moves, no matter how talented the investor. But it can be useful to keep an eye on what smart folks are doing. 13F forms can be great places to find intriguing candidates for our portfolios.

Daniel Loeb founded Third Point Offshore Investors Ltd., an investment adviser, in 1995. Third point currently has $8 billion under management and is event driven and value oriented. Often, Loeb engages in activist investing, as is particularly the case with his biggest holding, Yahoo! (YHOO).

His biggest purchases in the fourth quarter were Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (MRVL), Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) and Dish Network Corp. (DISH).

Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (MRVL)

Loeb bought 10 million shares of Marvell Technology at approximately $14 per share in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Marvell manufactures semiconductors, particularly for Ethernet, cable and DSL-related communications devices. It has a history of financial strength and growth and fell to a historical low P/E and low P/B and P/S ratio in 2011.

MRVL pe,ps,pb Interactive Chart

Marvell’s free cash flow has also grown steadily, from $25 million in 2002 to $1.1 billion in 2011. The company has $2.4 billion on its balance sheet and only $166 million in long-term liabilities with zero long-term debt. Gross margin, operating margin and net margin almost all expanded to their highest levels of the decade in 2011 (except the operating margin, which was 27.4%, slightly under its 2006 level of 27.4%).

Marvell’s core market was formerly storage, but over the past few years it has broadened its portfolio and is beginning to see the positive results. The company’s revenue growth of 29% in 2011 over the previous year was driven primarily by growth in newly entered markets, particularly a 110% revenue increase in the mobile and wireless end market, and a 15% increase in networking. Improvements in the overall macro economy benefited the business as well.

Though the company has implemented long-term growth plans, it lowered its fourth-quarter revenue expectation to $735 million to $745 million, compared to their prior outlook of between $775 million to $825 million. Thailand floods had reduced the supply of disk drives which recovered later in the quarter than they anticipated, and demand in China was unexpectedly soft. They expect these negative events to be temporary.

Continued investment in growth is a priority for the company. New products they have introduced include the industry’s first MIMO-based WiFi system-on-a-chip with integrated WiFi, Bluetooth and FM capabilities, and the DragonFly Virtual Storage Accelerator that improves server I/O performance by over 10 times and works well with enterprise-class cloud computing applications. Entrance into new markets and improvements in existing technology are expected to contribute to growth as well.

Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO)

Loeb’s second largest purchase in the quarter was an addition of 8,000,700 shares to his Yahoo stake at about $16 per share. He initiated the position with 480,000,000 shares in the third quarter at about $14 per share and began pushing for changes immediately afterward.

Yahoo! Inc. is the global Internet communications, commerce and media company that has been struggling in the last several years. Yahoo! Inc. has a market cap of $20.03 billion; its shares were traded at around $15.065 with a P/E ratio of 19.2 and P/S ratio of 4.

Once a thriving company, Yahoo’s revenue and free cash flow declined each year from 2008 to 2010, though earnings increased. Most recently, in the company’s fourth quarter, its GAAP revenue decreased 13 percent year over year. For the full year, GAAP revenue decreased 21 percent to $4.98 billion, primarily because of a change in revenue presentation related to the search agreement and revenue share with Microsoft (MSFT).

The search agreement occurred in February 2010 and allowed Microsoft to control Yahoo’s search and advertising business for 10 years. In return, Yahoo would provide the main advertising sales team for Microsoft’s search engine, Bing. Microsoft now retains 12% of the search engine revenues generated by Yahoo’s website for the first five years. It pays the remaining 88% to Yahoo.

Loeb mentioned some of the reasons he found Yahoo compelling in his third quarter letter: “Third Point revealed ownership of a 5.2% stake in the shares of Yahoo! Inc in early September. Yahoo is the premier digital media company, with global reach and content leadership, growing audiences and market share, compelling international assets, and a revitalized technology platform.

Third Point’s original 13?D letter and amendment filed alongside our SEC disclosure of ownership laid out our case for a targeted overhaul of Yahoo’s existing Board of Directors and encouraged the pursuit of strategic options to maximize Yahoo’s value. Since the filing of our letter, media outlets have reported that a strategic review process is moving forward and many parties are interested in the individual businesses and in some cases, the whole of Yahoo.”

Loeb has taken a very activist role with the company. A series of pointed letters between him and the management can be found here.

Dish Network Corp. (DISH)

Loeb bought 4 million shares of new holding Dish Network Corp. (DISH) in the fourth quarter at about $26 per share.

Dish Network Corp. offers satellite television products and services. Dish Network Corp. has a market cap of $12.72 billion; its shares were traded at around $29.02 with a P/E ratio of 10.4 and P/S ratio of 1. Dish Network Corp. had an annual average earnings growth of 28% over the past 10 years.

Dish was also a featured Magic Formula stock pick on GuruFocus in September 2011. The author notes that the company’s share price has stagnated while the underlying business value has increased. Over the last five years, its share price has declined 24%.

Revenue at the company increased every year from $4 billion in 2001 to $12.6 billion in 2010, and earnings have increased from a net loss of $215 million to a gain of $985 million over the same span of time. Free cash flow has been strong for the last eight years.

The company is highly levered, however. It has about $3.4 billion in cash on its balance sheet, along with about $8.8 billion in long-term liabilities and debt.

It is also losing customers. In its most third quarter, it lost approximately 111,000 net subscribers, compared to 29,000 subscribers lost during the third quarter of 2010. The increase in lost subscribers was from increased competitive pressures and competitors’ promotional offers. Also, telecommunications companies continuing to gain new customers and the overall weak economy contributed.

“Going forward, we plan to build on the momentum of our introduction of the Blockbuster-branded programming service which allows DISH customers to stream movies and TV shows as well as receive DVDs by mail,” said Joe Clayton, president and CEO of DISH Network.

Fort Wayne police are asking for the public’s help in finding a man who robbed a drugstore of prescription painkillers last weekend.

Wearing a dark-colored mask, the man approached the pharmacy counter of Walgreens at 222 E. Pettit Ave., near Lafayette Street, about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, according to police.

Keeping his hands in his pockets, he told employees he had a gun but never displayed one. A pharmacist gave him several bottles of Opana, a powerful painkiller sought in other recent pharmacy robberies, and he fled on foot, according to police.

Roughly one month after Morse College Master Frank Keil announced that he would leave the post at the end of the spring semester, the search for his successor has begun.

A search committee consisting of Morse fellows and students is gathering input as to what “strengths and characteristics” members of Morse think their new master should have, committee chair and Deputy Provost for Science and Technology Steven Girvin said. Though there is no definitive timeline for appointing Keil’s successor, Girvin said the committee will present its findings to University President Richard Levin next week, adding that he expects a candidate to be chosen “well before” the semester ends.

Girvin said in a Tuesday email that the search committee has met with college staff and emailed all members of Morse asking for suggestions and feedback on the search process. Committee members were available to speak with students during family night dinner last Sunday, Girvin said, and after the Morse College Council meeting last Tuesday. He added that the committee has invited Morsels to suggest faculty or staff members as candidates for master.

“The job of master in Yale College is incredibly important for our students,” Girvin said. “The master is the ‘mayor’ of this community as well as an academic leader, counselor, disciplinarian, and champion for the community.”

Levin said in an email Wednesday that Yale looks for masters who can connect with their students, and serve as both intellectual and moral leaders in their colleges. Residential college masters are usually senior faculty either in Yale College or one of the professional schools, but they can also be senior staff members, Girvin said in an email to Morse students on Feb. 6.

Angelica Calabrese ’14, a member of the committee responsible for talking to students, said she has received input from a “good number of people.” She said more juniors and seniors have contributed suggestions than freshmen or sophomores, adding that this is likely because older students tend to have had more one-on-one interaction with professors.

“Students are definitely coming forward with thoughts, ideas, opinions and suggestions,” Calabrese said. “I’ve gotten both names and general ideas.”

Keil, who announced he would step down on Jan. 11, said in an email Thursday that developing relationships with students outside of an academic context has been the best part of his job as master. He described his students as having “remarkable talents,” compassion and community involvement.

Calabrese said students will miss Master Keil, who has been a “great, fatherly figure” in Morse.

Two students said they are interested to see what impact the change of leadership will have next fall. John Aroutiounian ’15 said he thinks the new master should be experienced and should match the college’s “eccentric, eclectic” character.

“Whether it will be a seamless transition or not depends on how adept the new master will be at doing what Master Keil has done well, and building upon that,” Aroutiounian said.

Keil and his wife Kristi Lockhart, the college’s associate master, have served in Morse for 11 years.

Medinet announces release of Medinet Mail

VANCOUVER, Feb. 17, 2012 /CNW/ – Medinet, British Columbia’s source of integrated electronic health solutions
for physician offices and health authorities is pleased to announce the
introduction of Medinet Mail, its secure email solution. Physicians
using Medinet Mail can send secure and encrypted email messages to
anyone with an email address. Using patented technology, senders can
track each message to see when it has been received, taking the
guesswork from medical communication. The system maintains its traffic
on secure Internet mail servers located in Canada.

“The rollout of Medinet Mail is going extremely well,” says Medinet
President John Culter. “We’re getting rave reviews, with a number of
early adopter physicians sending secure, encrypted messages to
colleagues and patients. With an unlimited file size attachment, the
system is well suited to sharing confidential clinical information
between general practice doctors and specialists. Health authorities
are using Medinet Mail to help patients book appointments
electronically, and to pass clinical information back and forth in
advance of admission to hospital.”

Culter says, “We’ve been working on a secure email product for several
years, and are delighted to be in partnership with Email2 SCP Solutions Inc, which provides the underlying technology for Medinet Mail. This
product is the best developed, most secure and easiest to use in the
marketplace today. Because of the capable programmable interface, users
of Medinet Mail will be able to connect with Medinet’s over 15,000
users across the province. We expect it to become a significant
solution in the drive to move BC physicians from their present
dependence on fax into the new eHealth environment.”

Email2 SCP Solutions President Kirk Hamilton said, “We are delighted to
